Capital efficient process to launch a li-ion cell factory

Where as the standard cell production require sizeable amount of capital to initiate even a basic operation the Soft-Start process allows efficiency never seen before in the industry. How about starting your own li-ion cell production with few million euros instead of up to hundred million?

These steps are well standardised to enable production of liquid electrolyte li-ion cells. Each step require certain amount of investments, machinery, factory space and workers. Nikola has devised a ramp-up strategy with industry partners to provide a turn-key solution for a factory and enable unseen capital efficiency.

The Soft-Start process enables a multi-phase starting sequence. The first phase can be completed with less than one million euros. How this is done? With hard core know-how, 25 years of experience in the industry and through working on more than a dozen factory projects globally.

The first factory phase is to determine the needed cell and system design with the client. Choosing the cell format and chemistry are essential as this determines the needed equipment and partnerships with existing cell factories. Nikola recommends to focus ONLY on LiFePO4 cathode production with H2O slurries. We advise to stay away from highly volatile solvents and less fire proofed cathode chemistries.

The first step in the Soft-Start factory process is to receive otherwise fully finished cells from the partnering cell producer but without electrolyte. Cells are hermetically packed for transport and when receiving the cells one need only to unpack and inset the cells to dryer for 24 hours before adding electrolyte and cell assembly finalisation. In less than one week from receiving the semi-products these fully tested high quality cells can be sent away to customers.

The second step in the Soft-Start factory process is to receive stacked cell cores from the partnering cell producer. Cell cores will be inserted to the cell case and case will be sealed before entering to the step one described above. The new equipment to be installed are cell core insertion machine and case lid welding station.

The third step in the Soft-Start factory process is to receive coated anode and cathode reels which are hermetically sealed for transportation. Reels have been prepared in the existing cell production line and after unpacking the reels will be slit, cut and formed to the desired electrode size. Also cell core stacking machine is needed at this stage. Investment at this point is as much as the previous two steps combined.
